Shannon,

I am very sorry to disappoint you.  I do not want to disappoint anyone, but unfortunately it comes with the territory of running a rescue at times. 😢
Having recently had knee surgery too... we feel it's not the right time in your life to have a young dog.

Should you feel otherwise, that's fine.  We could be wrong, but must do what we feel and believe is right, for the pet and person.
Freckles was adopted out yesterday.  -So sorry to disappoint you again.
I wish you luck in finding the right pet.

Very Best,

Hi Jessica!
I am so disappointed, as I truly thought Freckles was a great fit. We even discussed things like specific preventative medicines like Heartguard & Nexguard.  I understand you & Michele have the responsibility of doing what you feel is best for the pet.
I know I have some strength issues in unfamiliar territory but I even talked about the lead that I had used for Nikky would definitely not be appropriate for Freckles, I explained that the padded walking harness would help her get more used to walking. I do understand that she is extremely timid right now, but it appears that she's coming more out of her shell each day. Unfortunately, I have no interest in a senior dog or a cat.  I very much like Freckles, if you don't deem we're a good fit hopefully you would still consider me for another small young- young adult pet.

Thank you again for responding so quickly,
S---

Subject: Freckles

Hello S---,

Michele told me you and your mother were very kind, good people too!
Thank you for taking the time to go meet Freckles today.
Michele did mention that you seem to have some trouble with balance and/or getting up and/or around quickly.
Once Freckles comes out of her shell, she'll be exhibiting full-blown young dog, puppy-like behavior.
I'm so very sorry, but I do not believe that a 1 year old dog is a good fit for you.

Michele also mentioned that you used to put your other sweet dog out on a long lead in the yard, while that may have been fine for her, it wouldn't be ok for Freckles, as she's an escape artist, and it's really not a very safe option for any dog to be perfectly honest.

It's my job to do what I see best fit for the pets in our care, and for the people adopting from us.
That being said, I believe you'd be better suited for a senior dog or a cat.

I did just list a senior dachshund on Petfinder that could be a better fit for you.  However he, like any dog, would need to be walked daily.  And with your perceived difficulty getting around, I'm just not sure you could make that happen.

Thank You, Very Best,

Jessica,
I know you & Michele have commitments today.  I just wanted to follow up & say how nice it was to be able to have a meet/greet with Freckles  & to meet Michele! It's great to see Freckles shyness & gage how she acted
around me & my Mom & Michele's dog! It went very well!  Michele & her husband were very kind! Both me & my Mom where commenting on how sweet Freckles seemed & Michele gave us great information. My behavior was to be non- threatening to Freckles & also to show her I could be affectionate with Michele's dog too. By the time we were leaving Freckles was already letting me stroke her head! I took pics of my fenced yard & my parent's fenced yard at each of our houses & would also be happy to send them to you. I believe you said you probably couldn't do any paperwork until Tuesday, (that would also give me some time to Freckles proof the house a bit more!😉 & get leashes, collars, walking harness, food bowls, etc. together) I kept some prevalent things (from Nikky).

Thank you both for accommodating so quickly!

-Why Rescue Makes Temp Move Back to So. Florida (08-2024)

This blog title was so simple to type, much simpler than the process of bringing this planned move into fruition!      ~And maybe 50 people read the rescue's blogs, it's certainly not a big audience, but still: even if one person reads it, and it helps that person and/or their pet, then it's worth it.     Why The Move (broken down into 3 categories):     1.) For approximately 4 years I worked at Miami Dade Animal Services when I lived in Miami Beach the first time around (circa 2010), mostly via an ASPCA-grant-funded-position which was aimed at increasing our live release rate… which I did quite well, but boy it was a lot of work!      Because of my time working in animal welfare while in Miami, I have some great rescue contacts there.     And I’ve always wanted to get Paw and Feather Plan ‘rooted’ in South Florida… where the idea for this rescue was born.         I know several individuals in a...

Policy Changes Affecting Individuals Requesting Rehoming Assistance from PAFP (changes do not affect our pet plan clients)

As of 01/31/2024 these are PAFP's new SOPs (last revised on 02/13/2024):     -As PAFP currently has a hospice foster that did belong to a plan client, the rescue isn't able to take in other fosters at this time for the most part.      -The rescue  tries to pull/rescue pets from our high intake municipal shelter, Louisville Metro Animal Services, exclusively .  The rescue pulls pets only when we have a confirmed, volunteer foster home for pets.       -Any rehome cases we do take on will be charged a rate of $17/hour, and the ability to pay the $17/hour is not a guarantee we'll be able to 'say yes' to your particular rehome case.  Additional Notes in Regards to these New Standard Operating Procedures:     In a continued and consistent effort to remain as transparent as possible for the rescue's small-but-mighty following, I offer detailed explanations on the why of each of the above new procedu...

Do NOT Feed Your Dog Grain Free Full Time...

Unless you want to put it at direct risk of dying prematurely of heart failure.      Yep, you read it right.  There are no 'ifs, ands or buts' about it:               Feeding Dogs a Strictly Grain Free Diet puts them at non-hereditary risk of dilated cardiomyopathy.      Thankfully, Janine, a PAFP foster and adopter, enlightened me to this fact.       Once Janine's 3rd whippet had late stage symptoms of advanced heart disease, she had reached her wits' end.  Her first two whippets had succumbed to heart disease too.  -And she just didn't get it: her dogs enjoyed top shelf dog food, Acana, had plenty of daily exercise, and regular vet visits.       That was it : beloved dog number 3 was going to a veterinarian-cardiologist.  -Enough with unexplained heart disease for Janine's dogs... and heartbreak for Janine!  Janine's foster, June, that almost w...
